This award provides opportunities for experienced U.S. journalists—including those in print, broadcast, and digital media—to undertake independent research projects in Japan. Grantees are expected to design feasible projects aligned with their qualifications and language skills, producing tangible outputs such as articles, television programs, or radio stories that explore aspects of Japanese society and culture. The program aims to foster mutual understanding and cooperation between Japan and the United States. Scholars are encouraged to engage with the host community through public talks, mentoring, and academic activities. Applicants are responsible for securing their own host institution affiliation in Japan, with final placements confirmed by the Fulbright Commission. The Flex Award option allows the grant to be completed over multiple short-term visits within two years.
