The fellowship, offered by the New York Public Library (NYPL) and Random House Publishing Group, is designed to support writers working on original nonfiction projects that require in-depth research using the Library’s world-class collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The program emphasizes strong storytelling, reportorial precision, artistic writing, and the use of unique archival materials such as manuscripts, photographs, maps, and more. In addition to a $30,000 stipend, fellows receive workspace, sustained access to collections, guidance from expert library staff, and opportunities to engage with the NYPL’s scholarly community. Fellows are also expected to present their research to the public and contribute to the NYPL blog.
