This program provides funding for field studies in any area relevant to astrobiology, a multidisciplinary field exploring the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life on Earth and elsewhere in the universe. Supported research spans astronomy, chemistry, evolutionary biology, geology, microbiology, molecular biology, oceanography, paleontology, planetary science, and related disciplines. Projects may include investigations of early Earth conditions, analog environments on Earth for extraterrestrial settings, and the study of life in extreme environments. The award is reviewed by a panel including members of the NASA Astrobiology Program and the American Philosophical Society. Recipients are designated as Lewis and Clark Field Scholars in Astrobiology.
