The Library Innovation Lab (LIL) is an intensive, cohort-based professional development program designed for public library professionals aiming to better serve immigrant and newcomer communities. The program blends mentorship, peer learning, and training in project management, collaborative program design, and community partnership building. Participants receive funding and support to design and implement innovative, community-centered public humanities programs that foster belonging and engagement. Since 2018, LIL has supported over 84 libraries, resulting in more than 2,000 events and reaching over 100,000 people. The initiative is now expanding nationally, with pilot activities in California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Califa Group and with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
