This fellowship opportunity, offered through the NRC Research Associateship Programs in partnership with the Air Force Science and Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP), supports advanced research in experimental low-temperature plasma physics and data-driven modeling aimed at improving electric propulsion systems for spacecraft. Research spans theory, laboratory experiments, and data analysis of various electric propulsion devices including Hall-effect thrusters (HETs), Electrospray thrusters, Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) thrusters, RF and Microwave Electro-thermal thrusters, Magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters (MPDs), Pulse Inductive Thrusters, Helicon thrusters, Electromagnetic thrusters, and other innovative concepts.
Key research topics include charged particle beams, plasma physics of Hall-effect thrusters, spacecraft plume and facility interactions, plasma diagnostic development, and high voltage systems. A strong emphasis is placed on integrating data-driven modeling with laboratory experiments to deepen understanding and enhance performance of electric propulsion devices.
The research is conducted at the Aerospace Systems Directorate, Rocket Propulsion Division, located at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
