--- ## Description This annual award recognizes and encourages significant contributions to inorganic chemistry, specifically in the area of main group elements (Groups 1, 2, and 13–18 of the periodic table). Inspired by the legacy of Professor M. Frederick Hawthorne, the award highlights creativity, independence of thought, and scientific impact. The recipient receives a $5,000 honorarium, a certificate, and up to $1,500 in reimbursed travel expenses to attend the award presentation at an ACS meeting. --- ## Due Dates - Nomination period opens: July 1, 2025 - Nomination deadline: November 1, 2025 (annually) --- ## Funding Amount - $5,000 cash award - Up to $1,500 for travel expenses to the ACS meeting where the award is presented - Award includes a certificate --- ## Eligibility - Open to researchers worldwide, including faculty, industry professionals, and chemists in all sectors. - Recognizes significant contributions to chemistry involving elements from Groups 1, 2, and 13–18 of the periodic table. - Special consideration given to creativity and independence of thought. - No restrictions based on race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, disability, or educational background. - Nominees are not required to be ACS members. - Previous ACS National Award recipients may be nominated for a different award if the work is distinctly different or at least five years have elapsed since the prior award. --- ## Application Process - Nominations must be submitted online during the nomination period (July 1–November 1). - Only one nominator per nomination; nominators need not be ACS members. - The nominator submits a recommendation letter; additional support letters are allowed. - Nominations remain active for three cycles if not selected. - Details and submission portal: [ACS National Awards Nomination Guidelines](https://www.acs.org/funding/awards/national/nominations.html) --- ## Additional Information - The award is supported by an endowed fund established by M. Frederick Hawthorne, UCLA, and his friends and colleagues. - The award was established in 2019. - Past recipients include Gary J.
