Funding Amounts: No fixed limit; awards typically range from 1–5 years and are based on project scope and budget justification.

Summary: Supports research on the geology and geophysics of ocean basins, margins, and the Great Lakes, including field, analytical, experimental, and modeling studies.

    Description

The Marine Geology and Geophysics Core Program supports fundamental research on all aspects of the geology and geophysics of present-day ocean basins, margins, and the Great Lakes. The program welcomes proposals that explore topics such as:

    • Structure, composition, tectonics, and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere
    • Paleoceanography, paleoclimate, and sea level change
    • Submarine volcanology, petrology, and geochemistry of the oceanic crust and upper mantle
    • Marine hydrogeology, water-rock interaction, seeps, and gas hydrates
    • Hydrothermal venting and associated geochemistry
    • Geochemical indicators of subsurface life
    • Marine sedimentology, stratigraphy, sediment transport, and diagenesis
    • Mid-ocean ridge and back-arc processes, transform faults, seamount formation
    • Submarine components of subduction zones and passive margins
    • Marine geohazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, mass wasting)
    • Coastal geological processes

Proposals may involve the acquisition of new field data, synthesis of existing data, laboratory or analytical projects, methods development, or modeling. All activities must advance the understanding of marine geoscience processes. Interdisciplinary and cross-program proposals are encouraged; researchers should contact program officers for guidance if their work spans multiple NSF programs.
