Description
This fellowship opportunity, offered through the NRC Research Associateship Programs in partnership with NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center, supports research on the population biology of marine mammals (cetaceans and pinnipeds) and marine turtles in the Pacific Ocean, especially the eastern tropical Pacific and California Current regions. The research focuses on understanding the status-of-stocks influenced by human activities and includes:
- Estimating relative and absolute abundance, condition, and replacement rates of populations.
- Conservation management decision-making frameworks.
- Population and molecular genetics to study intraspecific structure.
- Remote sensing techniques such as infrared thermography, acoustics, radio telemetry, satellite telemetry, and photogrammetry.
- Ecological habitat use patterns.
- Assessing impacts of anthropogenic sounds.
The program encourages proposals that involve analytical and synthetic studies of long-term datasets, addressing large-scale and long-term ecological and management challenges. Research may also cover species from the high Arctic, Gulf of California, and Southern Ocean.
