The Martin Duberman Visiting Fellowship at the New York Public Library (NYPL) is a prestigious annual award supporting excellence in LGBTQ studies. The fellowship provides $25,000 to a scholar—either established or emerging, academic or independent—to conduct original, archivally-based research using the NYPL’s world-renowned LGBTQ collections. These collections include one of the largest repositories of LGBTQ history and the social history of the AIDS crisis, spanning rare books, manuscripts, photographs, periodicals, and more.
Fellows are expected to utilize the NYPL’s LGBTQ collections, though research may also draw from other relevant library materials. The fellowship encourages projects that will make significant scholarly contributions and inspire further research in LGBTQ studies. Recipients are also required to give a public talk at the Library as part of their term.
