Supports small-scale, original research projects in Mathematical Sciences, including interdisciplinary work and career development, to foster innovation and collaboration.
Funder: UK Research and Innovation
Due Dates: Rolling (no closing date; apply any time)
Funding Amounts: £10,000–£80,000 per award (up to 12 months; 80% FEC, max £100,000 FEC per project)
Summary: Supports original research projects primarily in mathematical sciences, enabling new research, collaborations, and postdoctoral career development.
Key Information: Applicants can only hold one Small Grant at a time; interdisciplinary and discipline-hopping projects are eligible if majority in Mathematical Sciences.
This opportunity funds small-scale, original research projects primarily within the remit of the EPSRC Mathematical Sciences theme. The scheme is designed for projects that do not require the larger budgets typical of standard research grants, enabling researchers to explore new areas, generate proof-of-principle results, conduct short follow-on projects, establish or re-establish collaborations, realise user impacts, and support postdoctoral career development. Projects may be interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary, provided the majority of the research is in Mathematical Sciences. The scheme also supports 'discipline hopping', allowing researchers to move into or out of Mathematical Sciences research areas to foster new skills or collaborations.
Applications are assessed on a rolling basis by a panel of experts, with a light-touch feedback process. This initiative is part of a broader UK government investment to significantly increase support for Mathematical Sciences research.
