EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Small Grants fund original, flexible research and collaborations in mathematical sciences, including interdisciplinary and postdoctoral projects, with options for 'discipline hopping.'
Funder: UK Research and Innovation
Due Dates: Rolling (no deadline; apply any time)
Funding Amounts: £10,000–£80,000 per project (EPSRC funds 80% FEC) | Up to 12 months duration | Total annual budget approx. £2 million
Summary: Supports original, innovative research projects in mathematical sciences, including new ideas, collaborations, and postdoctoral development, with flexible, smaller-scale funding.
Key Information: Applications are accepted year-round and assessed on a rolling basis; only one small grant may be held at a time per applicant.
This opportunity provides flexible, smaller-scale funding for original research in the mathematical sciences. It is designed for projects that do not require the larger budgets typical of standard EPSRC research grants, making it ideal for piloting new ideas, generating proof-of-principle results, conducting short follow-on research, establishing or renewing collaborations, achieving user impacts, or supporting the career development of postdoctoral researchers. Interdisciplinary and collaborative projects are welcome, provided the majority of the work falls within the mathematical sciences remit.
The scheme also includes a "discipline hopping" route, supporting researchers who wish to develop skills or collaborations across disciplines, as long as the project involves a significant mathematical sciences component.
Applications focused solely on networking, community building, or impact activities are not eligible.
