Administered by Forecast Public Art and supported by the Jerome Foundation, this grant funds early-career artists pursuing public-art-related research and development or planning a freely accessible public-art installation or activity in Minnesota. Supported activities include research, community dialogues, site or budget development, model building, skill development, and building professional connections. Artists do not have to complete a public-art project during the R&D grant period.
Forecast supports artist-initiated ideas rather than predetermined sites, themes, or commissions. Its goals are to develop Minnesota’s public artists, help artists realize work they conceive and lead, and support new public art that may be difficult to fund elsewhere. Public art is defined broadly, encompassing temporary or permanent work on public or private property, including performances, installations, storytelling, sound work, gatherings, and social practice.
