The award funds innovative research that translates basic neuroscience findings into advances for the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, or cure of human brain disorders. Proposals should investigate the biological mechanisms underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders at synaptic, cellular, molecular, genetic, or behavioral levels, and may use any species. A new emphasis is placed on understanding how environmental factors—such as climate, nutrition, chemical exposure, and social determinants—contribute to brain disorders, particularly those disproportionately affecting communities of color. The program values collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and novel approaches, as well as a demonstrated commitment to equitable and inclusive laboratory environments. Awardees join a unique community of neuroscientists and participate in the McKnight Conference on Neuroscience.
