This award mechanism supports clinical research (not preclinical or clinical trials) conducted with human subjects, human samples, or data of human origin, performed by a clinician in training (mentee) under the guidance of an established mentor. The intent is to develop research skills among clinicians in training and generate data relevant to vision injury care, specifically addressing military exposure-related visual injury, dysfunction, or vision restoration. Projects may include stand-alone high-impact studies or serve as pilots to inform future, larger studies. The program aligns with the Vision Research Program’s focus areas and is managed by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
