Funding Amounts: $4M–$19,999,999 per project; up to $100M total program funding; project durations up to 5 years
Summary: Supports the design and implementation of mid-scale research infrastructure to enable advances in any NSF-supported science or engineering field.
Key Information: Preliminary proposals are required; full proposals are by invitation only.
This NSF program funds the design and implementation of mid-scale research infrastructure (RI) projects that fall between the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) and Major Multi-user Facilities in scale. Eligible projects include the development, acquisition, construction, or upgrade of shared research facilities, equipment, instrumentation, cyberinfrastructure, or large-scale datasets, as well as the necessary personnel to commission and operate the infrastructure. The program aims to address community-identified research needs and national priorities, foster innovation and transformative research, and broaden participation in STEM by supporting a diverse project workforce. Both implementation and design activities are supported, with design activities intended to prepare for future implementation projects.
