Summary: Supports mid-career health-professional doctorates with protected time for patient-oriented research and mentoring of junior clinical investigators, specifically for basic experimental studies with humans.
Key Information: Applicants must propose independent basic experimental studies with humans (NIH-defined clinical trials that are also basic research); prior consultation with NIH staff and review of IC-specific requirements is strongly encouraged.
Description
The NIH Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24) provides mid-career clinician-scientists with protected time to conduct patient-oriented research (POR) and to mentor junior clinical investigators. This specific opportunity is for independent basic experimental studies with humans—prospective studies that meet both the NIH definition of a clinical trial and of basic research. The award is designed to augment the research capabilities of established investigators and expand their role as mentors, thereby strengthening the pipeline of clinical researchers.
