This opportunity supports the ongoing operations of the National Biocontainment Laboratories (NBLs) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, and Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. The funding is intended to ensure these high-containment facilities maintain their infrastructure, biosecurity, environmental health and safety, regulatory compliance, and specialized research support services.
The NBLs are a critical national resource for research on hazardous biological agents, supporting NIAID's biodefense and emerging infectious diseases research agenda. In the event of a national emergency involving biodefense or emerging infectious diseases, the NBLs must be prepared to rapidly shift their focus to assist federal response efforts. The program also encourages collaboration with other NIH-funded investigators, industry, and public health agencies to maximize the impact and utility of the facilities.
