Description
The Media Projects program by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funds the development, production, and distribution of media content such as documentary films, television programs, radio broadcasts, and podcasts. These projects must be rooted in humanities scholarship and aim to engage general public audiences with humanities ideas in creative and appealing ways. The program encourages collaboration between media producers and scholars to ensure the content is thoughtful, balanced, and analytical.
There are two funding levels:
- Development: Supports early-stage planning and preparation of media projects, with awards up to $75,000 and a project period of 6 to 12 months.
- Production: Supports the full production and distribution of media projects, with awards up to $700,000 and a project period of 1 to 3 years.
Additionally, NEH offers Chair’s Special Awards up to $1,000,000 for exceptional projects.
Applicants should be aware that all NEH awards issued on or after October 1, 2024, are subject to revised federal regulations (2 CFR Part 200).

- Special district governments
- Public and state-controlled institutions of higher education
- Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
- Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status (excluding institutions of higher education)
- Private institutions of higher education
