Funds R&D projects to deliver open, secure, and user-friendly cloud services based on NixOS, advancing service portability and personal freedom in the internet ecosystem.

All results must be open access; software/hardware must use a recognized free/open source license.

--- ## Description This call supports projects that contribute to the development of secure, portable, and user-friendly hosted cloud services—especially those that simplify the deployment and management of modern internet services (including Fediverse applications like PeerTube, Mastodon, Owncast, Lemmy, as well as email, VPNs, cloud storage, and wikis). The initiative leverages the NixOS platform to enable reproducible, declarative, and scalable deployment, aiming to create an open, trustworthy, and reliable internet for all. Eligible projects will address challenges in software packaging, usability, deployment, and standardization, with a strong emphasis on open source and open access outcomes. --- ## Due Dates - Application deadline: August 1, 2025 (12:00 Brussels time) --- ## Funding Amount - Total pool available: €380,000 - Typical project funding: €5,000–€50,000 - Project duration: 1–12 months (flexible) --- ## Eligibility - Open to private individuals and organizations of any type (including universities, research institutes, companies, and non-profits). - Projects must align with the [NGI vision](https://nlnet.nl/NGI/vision) and have research and development as their primary objective. - Proposals must demonstrate a clear European dimension. - All scientific results must be published as open access; any software or hardware developed must be released under a recognized free and open source license. --- ## Application Process - Submit proposals via [https://nlnet.nl/propose](https://nlnet.nl/propose). - Review the [guide for applicants](https://nlnet.nl/fediversity/guideforapplicants) before preparing your proposal. - Applications should be concise (max two pages for the main application). - Projects are evaluated on technical merit (30%), strategic relevance to NGI Fediversity (40%), and overall value for money (30%) using a 7-point scale.
