Funding Amounts: Up to 2 years intramural support (NHLBI salary structure) plus up to 3 years extramural support (max $249,000/year total costs; $747,000 total for extramural phase; 8% F&A rate)
Summary: Supports NHLBI intramural postdoctoral fellows and research trainees transitioning to independent research positions at external institutions; independent clinical trials are not allowed.
Key Information: Only current NHLBI intramural postdocs/trainees are eligible; transition to extramural phase requires NHLBI approval and a tenure-track (or equivalent) offer.
This opportunity provides a structured pathway for highly qualified postdoctoral fellows and other doctoral-level researchers currently in training within the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research to transition to independent research careers at extramural (non-NIH) institutions. The award consists of two phases: a mentored intramural phase (up to 2 years) at NHLBI, followed by an independent extramural phase (up to 3 years) at an external institution. The program is designed to facilitate the establishment of a record of independent research and to support the development of junior investigators in heart, lung, blood, and sleep research fields.
Note: This funding opportunity does not allow applicants to lead independent clinical trials, but research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor/co-mentor is permitted.
