    Description

This opportunity provides a two-phase career transition award for highly qualified postdoctoral fellows and research trainees currently in the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research. The program is designed to facilitate the transition of these individuals to independent research positions at extramural institutions, with a particular focus on those proposing to lead an independent clinical trial, feasibility study, or ancillary clinical trial.

    The award consists of:

    • Mentored Intramural Phase: Up to 2 years of support within the NHLBI intramural program.
    • Extramural Phase: Up to 3 years of support at an eligible extramural institution, contingent on successful progress and NHLBI approval.

Transition to the extramural phase is not automatic and is based on a progress review and evaluation of the research plan for the independent phase.
