The NIA will fund programs giving recent college graduates intensive research experience in Alzheimer's and related dementias to prepare them for advanced study or research careers.
Funder: National Institutes of Health (NIH) – NIA
Due Dates: May 27, 2026 | May 26, 2027 (5:00 PM local time)
Funding Amounts: Up to $400,000 direct costs/year; project period up to 5 years; typically supports 5 new awards/year.
Summary: Supports development and implementation of postbaccalaureate research education programs to expand the Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementias (ADRD) research workforce.
Key Information: Clinical trials not allowed; programs must focus on recent baccalaureates and AD/ADRD research.
This funding opportunity supports institutions in creating and running postbaccalaureate research education programs that provide recent graduates with intensive, mentored research experiences in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementias (ADRD). The goal is to broaden and diversify the AD/ADRD research workforce by preparing participants to transition into advanced degree programs or competitive research careers focused on AD/ADRD. Programs should offer hands-on research, mentorship, professional development, and training in research rigor and reproducibility.
Programs must be distinct from existing federally funded training programs at the applicant institution and should demonstrate added value and unique structure. Collaborations with affiliated or local institutions and leveraging existing NIH- or federally-funded resources are encouraged. Participants must be recent baccalaureates, and the program must devote at least 75% of their time to research, with the remaining 25% for academic and professional development.
