    Description

This opportunity, offered by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) at NIH, is designed to help established, independent investigators enhance or redirect their research programs by acquiring new research skills. The focus is on research relevant to hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language sciences. The award provides protected time and resources for a short-term, intensive, mentored research experience, typically undertaken during an academic sabbatical or similar period.

The program is intended for experienced scientists (Associate Professor, Professor, or equivalent) who wish to:

    • Broaden their scientific capabilities,
    • Make changes in their research careers by acquiring new skills or knowledge,
    • Remain current with state-of-the-art techniques and technologies,
    • Redirect their research programs into new areas within the NIDCD mission,
    • Catalyze new research collaborations.

The research career enhancement experience must take place in a host laboratory (either at the applicant’s institution or another institution) under the guidance of a qualified mentor or mentoring team. The experience should be tailored to the candidate’s needs and may include didactic and/or laboratory-based instruction, as well as a small-scale research project.

Note: This award does not support independent clinical trials. However, applicants may propose to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor.
