Funding Amounts: Direct costs up to $275,000 over two years (max $200,000 in any single year); project period up to 2 years.
Summary: Supports exploratory and innovative neuroscience research at early, conceptual stages in NINDS and NIMH scientific mission areas; clinical trials are not allowed.
Key Information: Only mechanistic or basic experimental studies with humans (BESH) are permitted; standard NIH R21 requirements apply.
This program supports short-term, high-risk, exploratory, and innovative neuroscience research projects that align with the scientific missions of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The goal is to fund early and conceptual stage projects that assess the feasibility of novel research directions, with the potential to make significant advances in neuroscience or to develop new techniques, agents, methodologies, or models valuable to the neuroscience community.
This opportunity does not allow clinical trials; only mechanistic studies or basic experimental studies with humans (BESH) are permitted. Projects should be exploratory, may involve considerable risk, and are expected to generate preliminary data or proof-of-concept results that could lead to future, more extensive studies.
