Funding Amounts: No budget cap; budgets must reflect actual project needs. Maximum project period: 5 years.
Summary: Supports multidisciplinary research to advance understanding and improve prevention, testing, and treatment of HIV/AIDS and aging, consistent with NIH Office of AIDS Research priorities.
Key Information: Clinical trials are optional; foreign and domestic organizations are eligible; applications must align with NIH HIV/AIDS research priorities.
Description
This opportunity invites applications for multidisciplinary research at the intersection of HIV/AIDS and aging. The goal is to improve understanding of the biological, clinical, and socio-behavioral aspects of aging in the context of HIV infection and its treatment, and to enhance approaches for testing, preventing, and treating HIV infection and managing related comorbidities, co-infections, and complications in diverse populations and settings. Research must align with the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) priorities as outlined in NOT-OD-20-018.
Projects may include, but are not limited to:
- Studies on the mechanisms of accelerated aging in people living with HIV (PLWH)
- Research on HIV-related comorbidities, polypharmacy, and geriatric outcomes
- Interventions to improve quality of life, cognitive and physical function, and social support in older PLWH
- Leveraging existing NIH-funded cohorts, clinical networks, or data resources
- Comparative studies between older HIV-infected and non-infected populations
Applications may propose basic, translational, clinical, or behavioral research, and both clinical trial and non-clinical trial projects are allowed.
