Description
This NIH opportunity invites R21 applications for exploratory/developmental research at the intersection of HIV/AIDS and aging. The program aims to enhance understanding of the biological, clinical, and socio-behavioral aspects of aging in people living with HIV, and to improve testing, prevention, and treatment strategies as well as management of HIV-related comorbidities, co-infections, and complications in diverse populations and settings. Projects must align with the HIV/AIDS Research Priorities of the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR).
Research is encouraged to address:
- Mechanisms of accelerated or atypical aging in HIV-positive individuals
- Geriatric outcomes, such as cognitive and physical function, quality of life, and social support
- Interactions between HIV, aging, and comorbidities (e.g., cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive disorders)
- Impact of behavioral, social, and structural factors on aging with HIV
- Comparative studies between older and younger populations with and without HIV
Applications may include clinical, translational, or basic science approaches, and may propose clinical trials (optional). Collaborations across disciplines and leveraging existing resources (e.g., cohort studies, clinical networks) are encouraged.
