Description
This NIH funding opportunity supports the career development of individuals with a clinical doctoral degree who are committed to patient-oriented research (POR) and propose to lead an independent clinical trial. The award provides protected time (3–5 years) for mentored research and career development, aiming to foster the next generation of independent clinical investigators. The program is open to a wide range of clinical disciplines and is designed to help clinicians develop advanced research skills and experience necessary for independent research careers.

Funding Amount
- Award Duration: Up to 5 years.
- Budget: Composed of salary and other program-related expenses (e.g., tuition, research supplies, travel, statistical services).
- Salary: Provided as per the policies of the participating NIH Institute or Center (IC); see IC-specific information.
- Indirect Costs: Reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs.
- Number of Awards: Contingent on NIH appropriations and the number of meritorious applications.
Eligibility
- Eligible Individuals: Must have a clinical doctoral degree (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, DMD, PharmD, clinical PhD) and have completed clinical training (specialty and, if applicable, subspecialty) by the time of award.
- Citizenship: U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents.
- Effort: Minimum 75% full-time professional effort (9 person-months) devoted to the award.
- Mentor: Applicants must identify a primary mentor with a strong track record in patient-oriented research.

- For-profit organizations (including small businesses)
- State, local, and tribal governments

- Foreign organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed.
Note: Current or former PDs/PIs on major NIH research or career development awards (e.g., R01, K01, K08, K23, K99/R00) are not eligible.

Additional Information
- Clinical Trial Requirement: This opportunity is only for applicants proposing to lead an independent clinical trial, feasibility study, or ancillary study. Those not proposing an independent clinical trial should apply to the companion NOFO (PA-24-185).
- Mentoring Team: Multiple mentors are allowed if advantageous, but a primary mentor must be designated.
- Protected Time: Awardees must devote at least 75% effort to research and career development activities.
