This program supports established, independent investigators who wish to enhance or redirect their research careers by acquiring new research skills relevant to the hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language sciences. The grant provides protected time and mentored research experience, typically over a period of six to twenty-four months, enabling investigators to retool in new techniques, emerging technologies, or scientific areas. The award is specifically for basic experimental studies involving humans that meet both the NIH definition of a clinical trial and basic research. The goal is to foster innovative research directions and collaborations that will make the investigator more competitive for future NIH funding.
