Funding Amounts: No budget cap; project period up to 5 years (most awards 3–4 years); budgets must reflect actual project needs.

Summary: Supports clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of post-acute interventions and services to optimize longer-term outcomes for mental health conditions in youth, adults, and older adults.

Key Information: Clinical trial required; applications must be statistically powered for definitive effectiveness; pilot/feasibility studies not supported under this mechanism.

    Description

This opportunity from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) supports research projects that conduct effectiveness trials of therapeutic and service delivery interventions for the post-acute management of mental health conditions across the lifespan. The focus is on interventions that consolidate and maintain gains from initial treatment, manage residual symptoms or impairment, prevent relapse, and promote adherence and appropriate service use, all tailored to the stage of illness and designed to optimize longer-term outcomes.

Projects must be clinical trials that are sufficiently powered to provide a definitive answer regarding the intervention’s effectiveness. The research should also examine mechanisms of action, mediators, moderators, and predictors of effectiveness. The program encourages studies that address disparities in post-acute care outcomes for underserved populations.

Pilot or feasibility studies are not supported under this mechanism; a separate companion opportunity (R34) is available for such work.
