Funding Amounts: Up to 5 years of support; salary and research development funds provided per NIH Institute/Center policy; indirect costs at 8% of modified total direct costs.

Summary: Supports quantitative scientists/engineers to integrate their expertise with NIH-relevant research through mentored career development, requiring an independent clinical trial.

Key Information: Applicants must propose to lead an independent clinical trial; prior consultation with NIH staff and review of IC-specific requirements is strongly encouraged.

    Description

This opportunity provides mentored career development support for quantitative scientists and engineers (e.g., mathematics, statistics, computer science, informatics, physics, chemistry, engineering, economics) who wish to transition their expertise to NIH-relevant biomedical, behavioral, bioimaging, or bioengineering research. The award is specifically for those proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial as part of their research and career development.

    The program aims to:

    • Attract quantitative researchers with little or no prior focus on health and disease to NIH-relevant research.
    • Provide protected time (3–5 years) for supervised study, coursework, and mentored research.
    • Enable awardees to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to compete for independent NIH research support or to play leading roles in multidisciplinary research teams.

Applicants not planning to lead an independent clinical trial should apply to the companion FOA.
