Summary: Supports small, basic experimental studies with humans that fall within the NICHD mission and meet NIH clinical trial and basic research definitions.
This program supports small-scale research projects that involve basic experimental studies with humans (BESH) within the mission of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Projects must prospectively assign human participants to conditions and assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes to advance fundamental understanding of phenomena, without specific applications toward processes or products. Studies must qualify as both basic research and clinical trials per NIH definitions.
Eligible projects include pilot and feasibility studies, secondary analyses, small self-contained research projects, development of research methodology, or new research technology. Research areas must align with NICHD's scientific priorities, such as human development, pregnancy, childhood and adolescent development, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and rehabilitation medicine.
