Summary: Supports basic scientific research on attitudes, behavior, and institutions related to public policy and public services.
The Accountable Institutions and Behavior (AIB) Program, offered by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), funds basic scientific research that advances knowledge and understanding of issues related to attitudes, behavior, and institutions as they connect to public policy and the provision of public services. The program encourages theoretically motivated, conceptually precise, methodologically rigorous, and empirically oriented research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, individual and group decision-making, political institutions (appointed or elected), attitude and preference formation and expression, electoral processes and voting, public administration, and public policy. Research can focus on a single case or employ comparative approaches across time or contexts.
The program does not support applied research. In addition to research projects, AIB funds research experiences for undergraduate students and infrastructural activities, including methodological innovations. Researchers are also encouraged to consider related NSF programs such as Law and Science (LS), Security and Preparedness (SAP), and Research Infrastructure in the Social and Behavioral Sciences (RISBS).
