--- ## Description This program supported fundamental research aimed at the development of new or improved manufacturing machines and equipment, as well as the optimization of their use. The focus was on equipment for the manufacture of mechanical and electromechanical devices, products, and systems ranging in size from microns to meters. Proposals related to a broad range of manufacturing operations—including subtractive and additive processes, forming, bonding/joining, and laser processing—were encouraged. Projects of particular interest included those enabling the manufacture of equipment and facilities for energy product production. Competitive proposals were expected to be hypothesis-driven and advance the frontiers of knowledge in relevant areas. Both experimental and theoretical research were supported. Proposals were required to clearly articulate a research objective rather than a developmental one and include a separate section on the broader societal impacts of the proposed work.
