--- ## Description The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites proposals for research that enhances the understanding of the Arctic region, its rapidly changing environment, and its social and cultural systems. The program supports a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, including studies on Arctic natural sciences, social sciences, system science, and long-term observing networks. Projects may address fundamental processes, system-level interactions, and connections between the Arctic and lower latitudes. The program also provides logistical support for Arctic fieldwork. --- ## Due Dates - Proposals are accepted at any time; there is no fixed deadline. - Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. --- ## Funding Amount - Estimated total program funding: ~$40,000,000 annually (pending availability of funds). - Approximately 75 awards are made per year. - Typical minimum award: $330,000. - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants in the Arctic Social Sciences Program: up to $30,000 for one year (exceptionally up to $50,000 for 24 months with prior approval). - Conference proposals under $50,000 are common and can be submitted at any time. --- ## Eligibility Eligible applicants include: - U.S. institutions of higher education (two- and four-year, including community colleges) accredited and located in the U.S. - U.S.-based non-profit, non-academic organizations (museums, observatories, research labs, professional societies, etc.) associated with research or education. - U.S.-based for-profit organizations, including small businesses, with strong research or education capabilities. - Other Federal agencies and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) — must follow NSF guidance and contact the program before applying. - Alaska Native serving and Tribal organizations. - Foreign organizations may participate in cooperative projects, but NSF will only support the U.S. portion. **Note:** For proposals including international branch campuses of U.S. institutions, a clear justification must be provided for why project activities cannot be performed at the U.S. campus. There are no restrictions on who may serve as PI. For Arctic Natural Sciences and Arctic System Science, individuals may be listed as PI/co-PI/senior personnel on no more than two proposals under consideration at a time.
