--- ## Description This program funds research on the ecological and evolutionary principles that influence the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. Projects must focus on quantitative, mathematical, or computational understanding of pathogen transmission, and should be broad, interdisciplinary efforts that go beyond typical disciplinary boundaries. The program encourages proposals that integrate across disciplines—such as ecology, epidemiology, evolution, mathematics, computational science, social sciences, and more—to elucidate the determinants and interactions affecting the emergence and spread of infectious diseases in any host species (humans, animals, plants). Research can address a range of disease systems, including zoonotic, vector-borne, environmentally-borne, enteric, or respiratory pathogens, and may consider terrestrial, aquatic, or marine environments. Projects that address disease systems of public health concern to low- or middle-income countries (LMICs), or those relevant to agricultural systems, are strongly encouraged. International collaborations (including with UK, Israel, and China) are possible through special mechanisms. --- ## Due Dates - **Full Proposal Deadline:** November 20, 2025 (third Wednesday in November, annually thereafter) _All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates._ --- ## Funding Amount - **Typical Award Size:** $1,500,000 to $3,000,000 total for the U.S. component (up to 5 years) - Minimum for most projects: $1,500,000 total - Minimum for U.S.-UK, U.S.-Israel, and U.S.-China collaborative projects: $1,000,000 (U.S. component) - Maximum award size: $3,000,000 (U.S. component) - Research Coordination Network (RCN) proposals: up to $600,000 (U.S. component) - **Estimated Total Program Funding:** ~$36,000,000 annually (subject to availability) - **Number of Awards:** Approximately 12 new awards per year --- ## Eligibility - **Eligible Applicants:** - U.S.-based institutions of higher education (2- and 4-year, including community colleges) - U.S.-based non-profit, non-academic organizations (e.g., museums, research labs, professional societies) - U.S.-based for-profit organizations, including small businesses, with strong research capabilities - Federally recognized tribal nations in the U.S. - **PI Eligibility:** No restrictions on who may serve as PI. - **Proposal Limits:** - An individual may participate as PI, co-PI, or subaward lead on no more than two proposals per competition (excluding RCN proposals). - Additional limits apply for international collaborative proposals (see solicitation). - **International Collaboration:** Special provisions for U.S.-UK, U.S.-Israel, and U.S.-China collaborative projects; see program solicitation for requirements. --- ## Application Process - **Submission Platforms:** Proposals may be submitted via [Research.gov](https://www.research.gov/) or [Grants.gov](https://www.grants.gov/). - **Required Documents:** - Full proposal (no preliminary or letter of intent required) - Data Management Plan (max 2 pages, including IP plan) - Plan for Safe and Inclusive Work Environments (if off-campus/off-site research) - Senior Personnel List Spreadsheet (template provided in solicitation) - Supplementary documents for international collaborations (if applicable) - **Budgeting:** No cost sharing required.
