Supporting innovative mathematical research with biological relevance, emphasizing integration between mathematics and biology for significant impact.
Funder: U.S. National Science Foundation
Due Dates: Proposals accepted anytime | Final deadline: October 14, 2026
Funding Amounts: No fixed ceiling or floor; ~30 awards expected annually; typical award size and duration vary by project.
Summary: Supports innovative research at the intersection of mathematics and the biological sciences, emphasizing strong integration and relevance to both fields.
The program supports research in all areas of mathematical sciences that are relevant to the biological sciences. Proposals must demonstrate both mathematical innovation and biological significance, with a strong integration between the two disciplines. Projects may include the development of new mathematical theories, methodologies, and tools, especially those that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries within the Division of Mathematical Sciences.
The program encourages interdisciplinary projects and often seeks joint reviews with other NSF programs, especially within the Directorates of Biological Sciences and related fields. Applicants are encouraged to consult with program officers if their proposal may be appropriate for more than one NSF program.
