--- ## Description This program supports innovative research addressing the sedimentary crust and paleobiological record of Earth’s history, with the goal of advancing knowledge about environmental and evolutionary change over geologic time. Projects may focus on: - The changing aspects of life, ecology, environments, and biogeography in geologic time, based on fossil organisms and/or sedimentological data. - All aspects of Earth’s sedimentary lithosphere, including geological processes and the resources found in rock sequences. - The science of dating and measuring the sequence and rates of geological processes as seen in the pre-Holocene sedimentary and fossil record. - The geologic record of the production, transportation, and deposition of modern and ancient physical and chemical sediments. The program encourages collaborative, cross-disciplinary research, involvement of early career scientists, and broader impact activities, such as student participation and public engagement. --- ## Due Dates - Proposals accepted anytime --- ## Funding Amount - Estimated total program funding: ~$7,400,000 per year - Expected number of awards: 20–30 per year - Typical award size and duration vary based on project scope and available funds --- ## Eligibility - **Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs):** Two- and four-year accredited IHEs (including community colleges) with a US campus, applying on behalf of their faculty. - **Non-profit, non-academic organizations:** Independent museums, observatories, research labs, professional societies, and similar organizations in the US directly associated with educational or research activities. - **International Branch Campuses:** Proposals may include funding for international US IHE branches, but must justify the necessity for work at the branch rather than the US campus. - No restrictions on who may serve as PI. - No organizational or individual proposal limits, but resubmission of declined proposals is restricted (see Additional Information). --- ## Application Process - Proposals may be submitted via [NSF FastLane](https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/) or [Grants.gov](https://www.grants.gov/). - Follow the [NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG)](https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=pappg) for proposal preparation. - Letters of intent and preliminary proposals are not required. - Data management plan and, if applicable, specimen deposition statements and required permits must be included. - Collaborative proposals require a project management plan, task list, and timeline. --- ## Additional Information - **Resubmission Policy:** Proposals that have been declined are not eligible for resubmission for one year from the original submission date and must be substantially revised. Exceptions require prior approval by a program officer.
