Summary: Supports independent and collaborative wildlife rehabilitation research to improve animal care and expand knowledge of post-release outcomes.
The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) Research Grants program supports wildlife rehabilitation organizations conducting independent or collaborative research. Its scope includes wildlife medicine, wildlife education, post-release survival, clinical treatments, disease syndromes, behavior, nutrition, and husbandry. Studies can evaluate and compare approaches used in modern rehabilitation practices.
The program addresses gaps in quantitative evidence about the survival, behavioral responses, and reproductive fitness of rehabilitated wildlife following release. Many species in rehabilitation remain poorly studied, and common health problems and care challenges lack applicable scientific literature. NWRA aims to improve rehabilitation techniques, support growth within the profession, and expand scientific knowledge of species in rehabilitators’ care. Its Research Committee particularly encourages post-release studies and broad dissemination of findings.
