Description
The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Summer Internship Program offers a unique, immersive 10-week paid internship in New York City, designed for undergraduate students, recent graduates, and graduate students interested in stem cell research and related fields. Interns participate in one of several tracks—Data Science, Automation/Software Engineering, Programs Administration, or Laboratory Research—working alongside NYSCF scientists and staff on real-world projects. The program provides exposure to cutting-edge research, nonprofit operations, and professional development within a leading entrepreneurial research institute.
Interns are matched with mentors based on their interests and experience, and all participate in a comprehensive curriculum that introduces them to the full spectrum of NYSCF’s work. The program emphasizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

Funding Amount
- Compensation:
- Undergraduates: $18/hour
- Recent graduates (of an undergraduate program): $19/hour
- Graduate students: $20/hour
- Duration: 10 weeks, full-time (35 hours/week)
- Note: No housing or housing stipend is provided; interns are responsible for their own accommodations.
Eligibility
- Open to:
- Full-time undergraduate or graduate students (must have completed at least one year as a matriculating undergraduate)
- Recent graduates (undergraduate or master’s programs)
- Must be 18 years or older by June 2, 2025
- U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students with valid U.S. work authorization are eligible
- Track-specific requirements (see below)
- A minimum 3.0 GPA is preferred but not required
- PhD and MD students or graduates are not eligible
Track-Specific Requirements
Data Science
- Proficiency in Python and experience with machine learning, image processing, or related libraries
- Basic knowledge of molecular biology/genetics
- Open to students from biology or computational backgrounds with programming skills
Automation/Software Engineering
- Experience in computer science, engineering, or basic sciences with programming proficiency (C#, Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Angular)
- Experience with SQL and relational databases preferred
Programs Administration
- Interest in nonprofit management, communications, business development, or related fields
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
Laboratory Research
- Prior laboratory experience outside of coursework is highly recommended
- Experience with tissue culture is a plus

Additional Information
- The program is highly competitive, with approximately 20 interns selected each summer
- Most tracks require onsite presence in NYC; hybrid options are available for some tracks (minimum 4 days onsite per week, Thursday mandatory)
- Fully remote internships are not available
- Interns are responsible for securing their own housing
