The Ocean Drilling Program supports international marine geoscience research through multiple vessels and collaborative scientific planning.
Funder: U.S. National Science Foundation
Due Dates: Proposals accepted anytime
Funding Amounts: Estimated total program funding: $9,000,000 | Minimum award: $300,000 | Supplemental funding for some activities: up to $18,000
Summary: Supports basic research in marine geosciences through participation in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), including pre- and post-expedition studies and drilling-related research.
This program supports U.S. participation in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), advancing basic research in marine geosciences. The IODP is a global initiative focused on understanding Earth's history, structure, and processes through scientific ocean drilling. The program utilizes a multi-platform approach—including non-riser and riser-equipped vessels and mission-specific platforms—to collect data and core samples critical for addressing scientific objectives related to climate, environmental, crustal, and observatory science.
NSF funding supports U.S. researchers' involvement in IODP expeditions, advisory panels, and initial post-expedition research. Additional support is available for planning and thematic workshops, pre-drilling activities, and outreach efforts. Proposals for most pre- and post-expedition studies should be submitted through the appropriate NSF programs (e.g., Marine Geology and Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Polar Programs).
