The Packaging Innovation Program, led by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) with Clemson University and the Foundation for Fresh Produce, supports research to develop novel, sustainable packaging or packaging alternatives for U.S. specialty crop exports. This initiative responds to new and emerging regulations in key export markets (EU, UK, Canada, Japan) that restrict single-use and plastic packaging. The program focuses on applied R&D, technology acceleration, and pilot-scale manufacturing, aiming to help U.S. exporters maintain or increase market access, comply with regulatory requirements, reduce food loss and waste, and promote commercial adoption of reusable or packaging-free systems for fresh produce.
