This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) supports postdoctoral researchers in developing new photo/electroactive functional materials for Navy-relevant applications. Research focuses on understanding mechanisms of energy transfer, redox processes, and chemical transformations (bond-breaking and bond-forming) occurring on nanosecond to millisecond timescales. Areas of application include clean energy production (fuel cells, energy storage devices, electrolyzers), water treatment technologies, photo- and electrocatalysis, and plasmonics.
Candidates will leverage steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies (UV-vis, fluorescence, IR, Raman), photothermal methods, electrochemistry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, porosimetry, and thermal gravimetry analysis. Successful applicants should have experience in photochemistry/photophysics and additional expertise in organic/inorganic synthesis, materials chemistry, or electrochemistry.
The program provides access to state-of-the-art facilities and mentorship at NRL, enabling research that advances both fundamental understanding and practical solutions for Navy challenges.
