--- ## Description The Physical and Dynamic Meteorology (PDM) program funds basic research on atmospheric physics and dynamics at sub-synoptic scales. The program's scope includes, but is not limited to, severe and hazardous weather (such as tornadoes, tropical cyclones, organized convection, winter weather, and climate-driven extreme events), aerosol, cloud, and precipitation physics (including cloud microphysics, aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions, radiative transfer, and orographic processes), atmospheric dynamics and exchange processes (boundary layer meteorology, turbulence, atmospheric waves, land-atmosphere interaction, urban meteorology, wildfire-atmosphere interactions), and atmospheric electricity (lightning physics and electrification processes). PDM encourages a range of research approaches, including theoretical, numerical, laboratory, and field observation-based studies. The program also supports the development of new techniques and devices for atmospheric measurements, both through individual proposals and the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program. Proposals may be jointly reviewed with related NSF programs, such as Climate and Large-scale Dynamics, Atmospheric Chemistry, Aeronomy, and Hydrologic Sciences, as well as with other NSF divisions and directorates. The program does not fund projects primarily focused on applied research more appropriate for mission agencies. Researchers planning to use NSF-supported Facilities for Atmospheric Research and Education (FARE) should coordinate with relevant program managers early and follow the Facility and Instrumentation Request Process solicitation for proposal submission. PDM strongly encourages submissions from PIs at all career stages, from all institution types (including MSIs, non-R1 institutions, and EPSCoR jurisdictions), and from traditionally underrepresented groups in atmospheric sciences.
