The Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science is a two-year program hosted by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI). It provides early-career scientists—specifically, recent PhD recipients in chemistry, physical sciences, or material sciences—with immersive, hands-on research experience in the field of conservation science. Fellows join the Materials Characterization research group, focusing on the study and analysis of organic materials found in cultural heritage, such as paints and plastics. The fellowship emphasizes the development of analytical protocols, data evaluation methods, and collaborative research, with outcomes supporting conservation treatment strategies and technical art history studies. Fellows become integral members of a vibrant research community and collaborate closely with external researchers and practicing conservators.
