    Description

This opportunity invites applications for research projects addressing priority HIV/AIDS topics that fall within the mission of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Research should align with the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) priorities and focus on the mechanisms by which HIV or its treatment impacts diseases and organ systems relevant to NIDDK, such as diabetes, metabolic/endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic diseases, nutrition, obesity, kidney, urologic, and hematologic disorders.

    Projects may address:

    • Pathophysiological pathways linking HIV or its treatment to comorbidities within NIDDK’s scope.
    • Interactions between HIV and physiological processes (e.g., metabolism, immune homeostasis).
    • HIV reservoirs in NIDDK-relevant tissues (gastrointestinal tract, kidney, male genital tract, adipose tissue).
    • The impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on HIV-related comorbidities and reservoirs.
    • Effectiveness of interventions to address health-impeding SDoH and reduce HIV-related complications.

Both basic and translational/clinical research are supported, and clinical trials are optional under this NOFO.

Applications not responsive to this NOFO (e.g., those focusing on non-NIDDK tissues/organs, or not aligned with NIH HIV/AIDS priorities) will be administratively withdrawn without review.
