The Publication Subvention, supported by the Roger W. Weiss and Howard Mayer Brown Fund at the Newberry Library, provides up to $8,000 to subsidize the publication of scholarly books focused on European civilization before 1700. The grant is intended to support works in music, theater, cultural studies, or French/Italian literature that might otherwise be prohibitively expensive to publish—such as those requiring special typography, plates, or appendices—or to make important works more accessible by reducing their cover price. Preference is given to projects that are unique, bring previously unpublished source materials to print, or promise to reach a broad audience within their field.
