Summary: Postdoctoral fellowship at Naval Research Laboratory to conduct integrated remote sensing research on Arctic melt ponds and sea ice using optical, SAR, and lidar data to improve sea ice modeling.
Key Information: Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents; requires Ph.D. earned within last 5 years; includes access to advanced sensing systems and field campaign opportunities.
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) invites postdoctoral researchers to apply for a fellowship focused on using integrated remote sensing techniques to study melt ponds and sea ice characteristics and dynamics in the Arctic. The research aims to enhance sea ice models by incorporating observational melt pond data derived from active and passive remote sensing systems.
Applicants are expected to utilize airborne and spaceborne platforms employing optical sensors, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and lidar to retrieve melt pond parameters. The research should adopt a synergistic approach that leverages the complementary strengths of these remote sensing modalities across various spatial and temporal scales.
Expertise sought includes processing and analysis of optical, SAR, or lidar data, with skills in radiative transfer, data fusion, feature extraction, spectral analysis and manipulation, polarimetry, and advanced image processing techniques such as statistical methods and machine learning applied to high-resolution multispectral and hyperspectral imagery.
NRL maintains ongoing Arctic research projects addressing environmental changes in coastal terrain, nearshore environments, and sea ice. The selected fellow will have opportunities to participate in these projects, including field campaigns, and will have access to commercial and custom-built sensing/imaging systems (hyperspectral, multispectral, thermal, polarimetric), calibration facilities, and computational resources.
