Description
Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection offers residential fellowships for scholars and degree candidates in three fields. Byzantine Studies welcomes innovative research on society, culture, and art in the East Roman Empire and neighboring and successor states, roughly from the fourth through fifteenth centuries, including Eastern Christian communities beyond those boundaries. Garden and Landscape Studies balances historical research with current practice, from gardens to larger landscapes, including environmental conditions, urbanization, climate change, race, and gender.
Pre-Columbian Studies supports research on ancient American societies from northern Mexico to southern South America, including the Caribbean, from the earliest times through the sixteenth century. It welcomes art, archaeology, and historical or language research, with preference for humanities questions. The fellowships provide time for focused projects supported by the institute’s library, museum, rare books, and specialized collections.
