The SAGES Research Grants are designed to stimulate and support original research in gastrointestinal and endoscopic surgery. These grants fund both bench and clinical studies, with the goal of advancing knowledge, innovation, and patient care in the field. The program places a strong emphasis on scientific merit, methodological rigor (especially in minimizing bias), and alignment with SAGES' published research priorities.
Applications are reviewed in a blinded and competitive process, focusing on the research question's significance, experimental design, investigator qualifications, and the potential impact of the project. SAGES particularly encourages proposals from young investigators—defined as those who have not practiced surgery independently for more than 5 years—and projects that address priority research questions identified by the SAGES Delphi consensus.
Awardees are expected to provide regular progress updates, present their findings at SAGES scientific sessions, and submit manuscripts to Surgical Endoscopy, acknowledging SAGES as the funding source.
