    Description

The Research on Research Security (RoRS) program from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funds interdisciplinary research to strengthen the security of the U.S. research enterprise. The program aims to build a robust scholarly field around research security, supporting studies that generate data, analysis, theory, and tools to inform current and future decision-making on research security policies and practices.

Proposals are encouraged from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and may address topics such as:

    • The nature and pervasiveness of research security threats
    • Methods for identifying, preventing, and mitigating research security risks
    • Strengthening research security protocols and approaches
    • Human behavior and research security policies
    • Organizational change and cultural factors in research security
    • Research security in specific disciplines, especially high-risk areas
    • International dimensions of research security

The program encourages collaboration between STEM researchers, research security scholars, and practitioners, as well as partnerships with international organizations that share U.S. concerns.

    Types of proposals supported include:

    • Conferences and Workshops
    • Planning Grants
    • Early-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER)

Projects should leverage rigorous empirical methods and established methodologies from diverse fields to accelerate the development of research security as a mature academic discipline.
