    Description

This NIH funding opportunity supports research to advance the science of minority health and health disparities by focusing on family health, well-being, and resilience. The initiative encourages multidisciplinary studies at the family level, including both observational and intervention research, to identify risk and protective factors that influence health outcomes among families from populations experiencing health disparities in the United States.

Research may address mechanisms of family resilience or susceptibility to disease, epidemiologic studies, and family-level interventions. Projects must include health outcome or behavioral measures for at least two family members and focus on families from one or more NIH-designated health disparity populations. Animal studies are not supported.

The opportunity is open to a wide range of research topics, including but not limited to:

    • Family coping and functioning during extreme stressors (e.g., incarceration, substance abuse, disasters)
    • Family decision-making and resource utilization to promote health
    • Biological pathways linking family stressors to health outcomes
    • Family-based chronic disease prevention and management
    • Family-clinician relationships and their impact on health outcomes
    • Interventions leveraging technology or community partnerships to improve family health

Participating NIH Institutes and Centers include NIMHD, NIAAA, NINR, NCI, and others. Projects may propose or not propose clinical trials.
